Tijuana Panthers

Tijuana Panthers looking harmless …

This band really gave me some nice kitchen dances with air guitars and head banging – it’s swamp-infused monster rockabilly of the good kind. Rolling Stone calls them garage poppers – this doesn’t quite do it for me, but it’s hard to describe the sound, although I’d let myself down to use the word beat music.

12 Stones

12 Stones

This is one of those (hard-) rock bands which I found interesting enough in my 20s. My music taste has developed in a different direction, but I couldn’t yet hit the delete button because somehow, the songs are crafted enough and despite the fact that I just found out it’s christian rock.

Maybe hit delete after all …

The 101

For me, music of this band perfectly fits as background for doing stuff at home despite the fact that it’s really more on the punky side. Not too demanding nor aggressive, but driving and melodious nevertheless.

Thee More Shallows – Book Of Bad Breaks (2007)

This band is special in the way that their music is dense yet intricate, noise rock and pop meet at a party, so to speak.

I’d be glad if I might compare them to Conor Oberst on a shoegazing trip.

Fishboy – Classic Creeps (2011)

This is Adam Green, only more enthusiastic, a little faster and generally more … interesting. At least as funny and meaningful, but much more something to dance and listen to at the same time.

Shuggie Otis

Now this is one artist where I feel really embarrassed I haven’t known him earlier.

The soft, laid-back R&B from the 60s and 70s just fires up my good mood, no matter what I do in the background (or foreground). Superb guitar skills make this man a remarkable, true blues, funk & soul protagonist. One of those musicians that have an enormous potential which is never recognized or discovered by the mainstream. Nevertheless, he’s had and declined his offers, for a good reason, too.

Listen to his album Here Comes Shuggie Otis.

Enjoy.

Jim Noir

Now this easy listening rock music from the british isles does not – I repeat: does not – lack a good share of psychedelic feeling to it. Of course, being british, there’s no lack of humor in the lyrics, either.

Especially Jim Noir’s EP Zooper Dooper makes me smile, and at the same time, I can’t exactly refrain from tapping my feet to the music.

Hammond space organ sounds, groovy drums, James Bond guitars, soft, detached vocals – all packaged nicely in a 70’s rainbow box.

Actually, the album reminds me a lot of the even crazier, much more eccentric Magnus Moriarty™.

Remy Zero

Long time no hear no news, but lately, I suddenly stumbled upon a „new“ 2010 EP by Remy Zero. I instantly remembered that I had some intense listening moments with this band.

Keeping the good old alternative rock tradition, they have a thumping sound to them.

Sadly, the drummer passed away in 2010, and, as a result, the band has ceased to exist.

Conduits

Check out this indie supergroup from the US. Dense, dark and intense guitar sounds combined with slow, relaxed, sometimes hypnotic beats make you shoegaze the night away. Have a glass of red wine, or two. Or whiskey.

Not to be confused with the band The Conduits from the Netherlands.
